What We Do

Education
The Childhood Lead Action Project has been a leader in educating the community about lead poisoning prevention. Our grassroots approach to lead poisoning prevention education is unique in Rhode Island.

  • On-going training of thousands of parents, community leaders, service providers, property managers and contractors statewide with comprehensive education.
  • Design and implementation of neighborhood-based lead poisoning prevention education, outreach and public awareness campaigns for municipalities, including East Providence, Providence, Woonsocket and Central Falls.
  • Provision of information and referral services to the community on a wide range of lead poisoning issues, including financing for lead hazard reduction, screening sites, legal rights and available lead-safe housing.
  • Convened statewide conferences bringing together health and social service providers, lawmakers, attorneys, environmentalists, housing specialists and parents to collaborate on innovative strategies for eliminating childhood lead poisoning.
  • Produced "Be Lead Aware", a Lead Poisoning Prevention Resource Guide. This is a one-stop guide to lead poisoning; a first in the state!

    Advocacy
The Childhood Lead Action Project promotes lead safe policies through representation on policy making groups, testimony at legislative hearings and intervention in the regulatory process. The Project serves as a community catalyst in coordinating the Get the Let Out Coalition (GLOC), a statewide membership network of organizations, agencies and individuals advocating for change. Largely due to the efforts of GLOC, Rhode Island has made significant progress in securing protection for children through innovative public policy.

  • Advocated for lead safe Section 8 housing in Rhode Island, leading to an MOU (memorandum of understanding) signed by the major housing authorities agreeing to comply with federal state regulations.
  • Coordinated public education campaigns leading to state appropriations of several million dollars for lead hazard reduction funding, public awareness and staffing for enforcement efforts.
  • Worked in coalition with other stakeholders to establish the Housing Resources Commission responsible for housing, planning and policy for the state.
  • Served as a catalyst for the State of Rhode Island to pursue its landmark lawsuit against the manufacturers of lead paint. Rhode Island was the first state to take such action.
