Our Mission
Since 1992, the Childhood Lead Action Project (Project) has worked to eliminate childhood lead poisoning through education, parent support and advocacy. The Project is the only organization in Rhode Island devoted exclusively to this critical issue. Childhood lead poisoning remains the most pervasive, yet preventable environmental health problem in Rhode Island. It is one of the most insidious indicators of environmental injustice – children of color continue to have alarming rates of poisoning. Over the years, the Childhood Lead Action Project has come to be recognized as a leading education and information resource by the community and as a catalyst for social change.
Recent Awards The Rhode Island Public Health Association has presented the Childhood Lead Action Project with the Meritorious Program Award for its advocacy and leadership in efforts to eliminate childhood lead poisoning in Rhode Island. May 11, 2006 The 2006 Justice Award was presented to the Childhood Lead Action Project by Attorney General Patrick Lynch in recognition of the dedication and commitment they have demonstrated to environmental protection. Also, The Fund for Community Progress has selected Roberta Hazen Aaronson for the Sister Carol McGovern "Voice for the Voiceless" Award in recognition of her dedication and outstanding work.
The US EPA’s Office of Children’s Health Protection has recognized the Childhood Lead Action Project as one of 15 organizations receiving a 2005 Children’s Environmental Health Excellence Award for outstanding commitment to protecting children from environmental health risks. “This Program recognizes individuals, communities and organizations who are leaders in making our environment healthier for our children,” said William Sanders, Acting Director of the EPA’s Office of Children’s Health Protection. “This year’s winners exemplify what it means to have strong commitment to children’s health.”
